Description

Departure from the hotel at 8:00 AM. The Khmer civilization is often associated with the monuments on the Angkor Plain, where cities were built very close to each other, sometimes even in the same location. While most of Cambodia's architectural masterpieces are located in this area, there are some remarkable structures in other places as well. In addition to the well-known sites, there are lesser-known routes, sometimes challenging to access, but the charm of the places they pass through more than compensates for the effort.

Sambor Prei Kuk - a pre-Angkorian city.It stands far from busy modern highways, over 30 kilometers from the nearest town of Kampong Thom, and only the most dedicated individuals make their way to it. And their efforts are well worth it. After visiting Sambor Prei Kuk, enthusiastic travelers, like in a time machine find themselves in Cambodia's Angkorian past. And, to their surprise, they discover that it was not primitive, that there were predecessors to the Angkor temples, and that large cities existed in the country as early as the 6th century. Sambor Prei Kuk is indeed a large city, with a radius of about one kilometer, and there are individual structures well beyond this perimeter. It is known that the city was the center of the Chenla Land (Chenla Water was located to the south of Phnom Penh) - a state consisting of relatively independent principalities.

Statues that once stood in the city's temples, now preserved in the National Museum in Phnom Penh, owe their uniqueness to their gave a name to a whole style in sculptureit is called the Sambor Prei Kuk style, and it is known for some of the most beautiful sculptures found in Cambodia. One of these sculptures is the figure of Devi, the wife of Shiva, characterized by confident restraint and mature feminine beauty. Today, a replica of this sculpture greets travelers at the Siem Reap International Airport.
