Description

The name Stone Town refers not to the entire modern city but only to its old historical part. Its architecture is a whimsical mix of Eastern style with European and African additions, creating a unique atmosphere for the city. Stone Town is the gateway to the island, the historical center, and also its only real city, with a population of 200,000 people. The once-fishing village here was favored by Arab slave traders who exported live goods from Africa. Over time, the settlement grew, and stone buildings emerged: forts, houses of wealthy merchants, and mosques.Portugal later colonized Zanzibar, and for two centuries, Stone Town expanded under European influence. By the end of the 17th century, Arabs began to actively reclaim the territory, gradually establishing the dominance of the Omani Sultanate over Zanzibar. Later, Zanzibar became a separate sultanate. In 1890, it fell under British protectorate, which lasted until 1964. Around that time, the old Zanzibar began to be called Stone Town because, unlike local villages, it had many stone buildings.
